Unlike most Paralympic athletes, Margriet’s ‘Road to Rio’ started somewhat later on in life.
Having harbored a passion for sport since childhood, a hip disorder had always prevented her from competing with able-bodied people. It wasn’t until just three years ago that, despite a worsening disability, Margriet discovered her athletic calling in wheelchair racing. Since that moment, she’s thrown herself into the sport whole-heartedly, and with spectacular results.
Never the victim, always the fighter and a sportswoman through and through, Margriet’s progress in the sport took even her coaches by surprise. Now with a European Championship silver medal and two bronze World Championship medals under her belt, she has made an indefinable mark on the international ‘wheeling’ scene.
With Rio just around the corner, Margriet is now hoping to put years of dedicated training to the test at the very highest level. She’s come a very long way in just three years, and while no one knows how far she can go, the most important element remains the same as the day she started – her love for the sport.
As they say: “Love conquers all”. Margriet’s love of the sport has conquered quite some serious injuries and financial worries. Because of her age she doesn\’t qualify for many of the standard funds that are available for the younger athletes. It\’s not allowed to show any branding during competitions so sponsorship is near to impossible. There have been some very kind sponsors in the last few years, but it has been insufficient to survive until the games in September. Next to the regular expenses, that are quite steep already, Margriet had to buy a new wheeler this year. And to add to the bad luck, it needed a do over, because the frame needed alterations.
